Women’s volleyball to play Taiwan for final 5-6 spots, not North vs. South
The South Korean women’s volleyball team defeated Kazakhstan to advance to the 5th-6th place match. Korea will face Chinese Taipei in the final match of the tournament.
South Korea, coached by Cesar Hernandez (Spain), defeated Kazakhstan 3-0 (25-18 25-18 25-16) in straight sets in the women’s volleyball fifth-eighth place match of the Hangzhou 2022 Asian Games at the Duching Sports Center Gymnasium in Huzhou, Zhejiang Province, China on Saturday (June 6).
The victory avenged a shutout loss to Kazakhstan in the fifth-sixth place match at the Asian Volleyball Federation Asian Championships in Thailand last month.
The Koreans, who were eliminated from the tournament earlier in the day, defeated North Korea to finish the quarterfinal round 1-2, setting up a fifth-place match against Chinese Taipei.
Chinese Taipei won the fifth-to-eighth place match against North Korea 3-1 in straight sets to set up a meeting with South Korea 굿모닝토토.
Korea was led by middle blocker Lee Da-hyun (Hyundai E&C) with 14 points, while outside hitter Kang So-hwi (GS Caltex) added 13 points. Middle blocker Park Eun-jin (Jung Kwan-jang) also chipped in with 11 points.
The Koreans used the middle of the floor to take an early lead. They cruised to a 25-18 first set victory.
After a brief Kazakh counterattack at the start of the second set, Korea slowly closed the gap and scored back-to-back points to change the momentum. Korea also took the second set 25-18.
In the end, Korea won the match in a shutout.
Meanwhile, the final match of the tournament will be between China and Japan for the gold medal. In the day’s semifinals, China defeated Thailand 3-0 in straight sets, while Japan defeated Vietnam 3-1.
