A different start for Klinsmann, ‘former South Korea boss’ Bento cools to 4-1 win on debut… UAE, Costa Rica caught
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) national soccer team’s new coach, Paulo Bento, scored an emphatic victory on his debut in charge of South Korea.
Bento’s UAE defeated Costa Rica 4-1 in an A match at Stadion Maksimir in Zagreb, Croatia, on Wednesday (Sept. 13).
Bento, who left South Korea after the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, took charge of the UAE in July. He signed a three-year contract to lead the UAE until the 2026 World Cup in North and Central America.
The UAE has had a number of world-class coaches in the past, but all of them have failed. The team’s international results have been poor. The team failed to qualify for last year’s World Cup in Qatar. The UAE’s last World Cup appearance was in Italy in 1990. The likes of Alberto Zaccheroni and Bert van Marwijk were previously in charge of the team, but they failed to fulfill their dreams.
“I am here to work, not to vacation,” said Bento upon his appointment, “I have enough information and I will try to build a good and stable team. I think we can please the UAE fans with victories.”
Bento has delivered on his promise since his debut. He shocked Costa Rica, a team that is considered to be a powerhouse. The UAE is ranked 72nd in the FIFA rankings, while Costa Rica is 46th. On this day, however, the UAE used a four-goal explosion to pull off the upset.
Costa Rica had just beaten fellow Middle Eastern nation Saudi Arabia 3-1 in their previous match on September 9. But they couldn’t get past Bento’s UAE.
Bento went with a 4-2-3-1 formation. It was an attacking game from the start.
Al Ghassani opened the scoring in the 16th minute, followed by Kaio Canedo in the 23rd and Ali Salmin in the 38th. It was 3-0 in the first half.
The momentum continued in the second half. The UAE practically drove a wedge into the game eight minutes into the second half when Al Ghassani rattled the net again.
The UAE pulled a goal back in the 19th minute through Costa Rican Julio Cesar Castante Solorsano. However, the scoreline had already widened considerably, so it didn’t have much of an impact on the outcome.
“The UAE national team won against Costa Rica,” the UAE Football Association announced on its official social media accounts.
On the other hand, South Korea coach Jürgen Klinsmann, who has been in charge since February, has had a fairly shaky start. After three draws and two defeats in their first five matches, they earned a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Saudi Arabia on July 13. ‘World Cup star’ Cho Kyu-sung scored the header.
South Korea, ranked 28th in the FIFA rankings, drew 2-2 with Colombia and lost 1-2 to Uruguay in A matches in March. In June, they lost 0-1 to Peru and tied 1-1 with El Salvador. On Aug. 8, they drew 0-0 against 35th-ranked Wales, which has a lower FIFA ranking than South Korea, after being out-shot 4 to 11. Klinsmann was the first coach to go five games without a win since the introduction of the full-time manager system in 1992.
South Korea and Mourinho could meet as foes in the future. The second round of Asian qualifiers for the North and Central American World Cup will be held in November. Next January, Qatar will host the 2023 Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Asian Cup.
Bento was in charge of the South Korean national team from 2018 to 2022. His accomplishments include winning the 2019 East Asian Cup and reaching the round of 16 at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. South Korea reached the round of 16 at the World Cup for the first time in 12 years after the 2010 tournament in South Africa. Bento is also the “longest-serving” coach of the South Korean national team 카지노사이트.
Prior to his appointment in the UAE, Bento was pushing for a return to Europe. Immediately after the World Cup in Qatar, he was rumored to be the head coach of the Polish national team. However, the Polish national team chose Fernando Santos, formerly of Portugal, as their new head coach.
Instead, Ventura took the helm of the UAE national team and continued his coaching career in Asia once again. Bento has also coached Chongqing Dangdai Lifan (China), Olympiakos (Greece), Cruzeiro (Brazil), the Portuguese national team, and Sporting Lisbon.
